First, a bit of good news. The claim that was the subject of the mediation from hell yesterday settled after I left! Six hours of nothing but arguing and then things got settled in an hour at the end of the day. Usually how things go, but not sorry I was already headed home. The day was long enough, thank you.
The NJ Manager was already in the office this morning when I arrived at 7:45ish. He is a bit frazzled as is everyone else in the office. They said we are getting 100 to 200 new claims A DAY from the storm and there are something like 400 or more waiting to be set up to get claim numbers. It's staggering. We're not sure how everything will eventually get processed (as in letters and checks). We have been told they are bringing in temps to do whatever work...blah, blah, blah. Even if you have 50 adjusters handling claims, if you don't have the administrative side staffed things are going to go exactly nowhere.
We're a little scared.
In my world (which is liability claims, not homeowners or property) things are weirdly slow. I was out an entire day and am still relatively caught up. Huh. I figure it's only a matter of time before overflow shit claims start coming my way.
So today, I called the NJ Manager about something and he said HE has been assigned 60 new property claims. PLUS, he is handling the grumpy guy's liability claims from last week's resignation. Once again, I offered - OFFERED - to take some of those off his hands. And NJ manager said "no". They claim to be hiring one or more new liability people. Uh huh.
After offering to take on more work and being told "no, don't worry about it", I still feel guilty. How wrong is that? I know others are putting in 12 or 16 hour days and are totally overwhelmed....and here I sit practically twiddling my thumbs. Yes, guilt is a wasted emotion but I can't help it. And I know the others in the office are pissed off that I'm not being slammed with work, too.
How do you let go of the guilty feeling?
Typically with scotch or bourbon ;-)
ReplyDeleteHe might be holding you in reserve to deal with screw-ups by the temps and newbies - being good has its drawbacks ...
Funny, I was trying beer first. lol
DeleteYeah, that thought occurred to me, too. I have a nagging suspicion something special is being "saved" for me.
BTW...very cool to see arecibo again! :)
How do I handle guilt? Not very well these days .. but hey .... best not to be negative right!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's what they say....
DeleteSheesh Pam...bring it on girl! But I guess it is a nice gesture if you are not as busy as the rest. But I would agree they may be saving you for "clean up" status. But after Tuesday not sure you will want to cause any waves....a job will be something not many get to have.
ReplyDeleteSo how is the beach thing going for Thanksgiving? It sure sounds like a great time...I can close my eyes and take myself there sometimes. Pure heaven for me.
So to answer your question....I have lived with guilt for too long and I would prefer a life without such crap....and it really doesn't stick to me anymore so I guess I am past it in a way. It does not register with me and I call it as soon as I see it. Not sure if that is good or not.
Hope your day is guilt free!
Hugs, Peter
No sure what Tuesday has to do with me....we have thousands more claims than we had two weeks ago - they would be crazy to let any adjuster go now. In fact, they hired about 10 more. And what waves are caused by ASKING for work?
DeleteThe beach thing is still on the agenda for Thanksgiving if the weather holds. It's tradition now. :-)
